The Eagle's Nests : America's Airbases in the Heart of the Middle East

Al Udeid Base's strategic importance after Iran's
attack
Tensions are rising again in the Middle East, and Qatar’s Al
Udeid Air Base is back in the global spotlight. Iran’s missile attack has
highlighted the base’s strategic role and the surrounding geopolitical
dynamics.
On June 23, Iran launched a missile attack on Al-Udeid
airbase, which was in response to the attacks on the US nuclear facilities in
Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. According to Qatari officials, 19 missiles were
fired, 18 were intercepted, and one missile hit the base, but no one was
injured.
Iran has called the attack a “right of self-defense” under
Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The US and Qatar confirmed that no
one was harmed, which was due to advance warning and evacuation.
Al Udeid Air Base, southwest of Doha, hosts more than 10,000
US and coalition forces. The base is the forward headquarters of US Central
Command.
· Surveillance and reconnaissance.
· Aerial refueling
· Combat logistics support missions
· Command and control of regional operations
This base is strategically important to Qatar's stability
The challenge of Qatar
Qatar has greatly condemned the attack and termed it against
its sovereignty and
integrity. Iran said that the attack was not on Qatar but on
the US base, but its geopolitical pressure is directly on Qatar.
On the one hand, Qatar is a strategic ally of the United
States, and on the other hand, it is also close to Iran. This double identity
keeps it in balance.
What will be the consequences?
Both sides tried to avoid escalation. Iran launched the same
number of missiles at the U.S. base as the U.S. had dropped bombs on Iran. This
showed that Iran wanted to respond carefully, not escalate the situation.
Still, tensions remained high
· Panic in Doha, people fleeing from the mall.
· Airspace has been temporarily banned.
· Issued a shelter-in-place advisory at the US
Embassy
Impacts around the world
· Air travel: Several Gulf airlines cancel
flights
· Oil prices: Global market uncertainty has
increased
· Military response: US may increase its
military presence in the region
The attack on Al-Udeid was not a military strike; it was a
diplomatic wake-up call. Qatar will have to reconsider its foreign policy and
security commitment.
